There are thousands of overwater bungalow resorts scattered across the world.
And the majority of these resorts aren’t affordable.
So, we decided to do the research to help you find the most affordable overwater bungalows in the world.
But we didn’t just pick any resort…
- We first compiled a spreadsheet of 43 affordable overwater bungalow resorts.
- We searched the Caribbean, South Pacific, and Asia since most bungalows are found in these regions.
- We then compared each resort based on their starting price per night and average public rating. Each resort that made this list got an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars or above.
Now that you know our selection process, let’s start in the Caribbean region.
10. Urraca Private Island Eco Lodge
This is an adults-only hotel, located on its own private island in Bocas del Toro, Panama.
You can get to it by taking a 35-minute boat ride from Isla Colon.
They only offer a total of six overwater bungalows.
4 regular bungalows, 1 honeymooner’s hut and 1 larger bungalow that accommodates up to six people.
Urraca focuses on protecting the environment.
The island is completely powered by solar panels and they get their fresh water by collecting rainwater.
One of the coolest parts is that there are 12 monkeys living on the island.
So if you stay here, you’ll most likely have several monkey encounters.
The resort even has a Monkey wishlist on their website.
Oh, and not to mention they have a lobster garden where you can pick your own lobster moments before you dine.
Whether you’re looking for an affordable honeymoon destination or a relaxing family getaway, check out Urraca Private Island.
9. Eclypse De Mar Acqua Lodge
Here’s another overwater bungalow resort that’s focused on preserving the environment.
And it’s also located in Bocas Del Toro, Panama, however, they’re not adults-only – they allow children.
They have seven overwater bungalows that are built with local wood and palm-leaf roofing.
Solar-powered electricity, coastal maintenance, and wastewater treatment are all things they do to minimize their impact on the environment.
Feel good about your tropical vacation while enjoying the island life at Eclypse De Mar Acqua Lodge.
8. Thatch Caye
Thatch Caye has made a few of our lists before.
And there’s a reason for that – it’s a great, affordable overwater bungalow choice in Belize.
Located on its own private island, they only allow 30 guests at a time, making for a peaceful atmosphere.
There’s no wifi access in rooms, only in the common areas.
It’s yet another resort that focuses on sustainability. A portion of each reservation is donated to local charities and they even banned single-use plastics.
They have a cool feature on their website where you can take a virtual tour of their bungalows. It’s pretty realistic too, it’ll give you a good idea of what it’s like.
Thatch Caye is going to be a little more expensive than the Eco-Resorts in Panama.
Whether you’re a family or couple looking for an affordable overwater bungalow, check out Thatch Caye.
7. Melia Cayo Coco
An all-inclusive, adults-only resort located on Cayo Coco island in Cuba.
This resort is popular among couples that are looking for an affordable over the water getaway.
They’re perched above a saltwater lagoon, so it’s not the ideal place to jump off and snorkel. And as you can see, they’re also not your traditional looking bungalows.
They’re similar in pricing to the Eco-Lodges in Panama and more affordable than Thatch Caye.
If you’re looking for a romantic Caribbean getaway, Cayo Coco should definitely be on your list.
Moving on to the South Pacific, we have…
6. IC Le Moana Bora Bora
Bora Bora is a tropical dream come true.
From its crystal clear lagoons to exotic mountain views, it can put anyone’s mind at ease.
And you can experience incredible overwater bungalows at the Le Moana, which is located at the southernmost tip of Bora Bora.
Compared to most Bora Bora resorts, this is one of the most affordable. But let me be clear, it’s not going to be as cheap as the bungalows in the Caribbean.
However, when you compare it to other resorts in the area, it’s a more affordable option.
To get there, take a 50-minute flight from the main island of Tahiti and then an additional 30-minute boat ride to the resort.
They offer 3 types of overwater bungalows, the Lagoon, Horizon, and End of Pontoon bungalows.
The cheapest ones are going to be the Lagoon bungalows. Bottom line, this is a great option for couples & honeymooners.
5. IC Moorea
Perhaps you’re looking for a resort where you don’t have to travel as far from the airport. If that’s the case, then Intercontinental Moorea might be the best option.
It’s located about 15 miles from the airport on the northwest tip of Moorea. You’ll find cheaper priced bungalows at Moorea than at the Bora Bora one.
Again, this resort is affordable for French Polynesia but it’s more expensive than the Caribbean.
They offer two different kinds of bungalows, standard and premium. And even allow up to 3 adults to stay in each. This is different from the Bora Bora ones since they only allow 2 adults.
So if you split the cost between 3 adults at this resort, your price per night would be much cheaper.
Whether you’re a family looking for a French Polynesian getaway or a couple, this is a fantastic option to consider.
Next, we take a look at overwater bungalow resorts in Asia, starting with…
4. Telunas Private Island
Located about 2.5 hours from Singapore on its own private island, they have 15 overwater bungalows.
Surrounded by lush jungle and tropical sea, there’s a thriving amount of wildlife you’ll come across. From grey-back monkeys to pink dolphins, you could witness some beautiful creatures.
Similar in pricing to the Eco-Resorts and Melia Cayo Coco, this is an affordable overwater bungalow option.
And it’s much cheaper than the ones in French Polynesia.
Whether you’re a couple looking for a romantic getaway or a family with children, they welcome all guests.
3. Papua Paradise
Located on the north-eastern peninsula of Birie Island in Indonesia, this resort is a bit more expensive than Telunas.
However, it’s similar in pricing to Thatch Caye.
Most of their guests visit because of the incredible diving that’s nearby.
Featuring 26 overwater bungalows that are all built with local materials, they offer two types of bungalows…
Superior and Deluxe
- The superior ones are a bit smaller than the deluxe ones.
And it’s worth noting that this resort is very remote, so take travel insurance and your health into consideration.
If you’re looking for a diving resort with overwater bungalows, Papua Paradise might be the place for you.
2. Vilamendhoo Island Resort
Located in the South Ari Atoll of the Maldives, this resort is perfect for snorkeling & diving enthusiasts.
The Maldives is now the top place for overwater bungalows. So it wouldn’t be a complete list without this incredible destination.
Considering the price you’re paying compared to other Maldives resorts, this is a bang for your buck.
Not as cheap as the Eco-Lodges but keep in mind that the Maldives is one of the most sought after tropical destinations in the world, similar to French Polynesia.
If you’re looking for one of the most affordable overwater bungalows in the Maldives, add Vilamendhoo Island Resort to your list.
1. Gangehi Island Resort
The final overwater bungalow resort on our list is also located in the Maldives.
It’s a short 25-minute seaplane ride from the capital of the Maldives, Male.
They offer 16 overwater bungalows, with two different types…
- 8 standard
- 8 deluxe
The deluxe is furnished much more luxuriously.
Bottom line, if you’ve ever wanted to experience overwater bungalows in the Maldives, then Gangehi Island Resort is a great option.
